MAP OF BAKASSI |
The Federal Government, in a statement by the Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke, (SAN), on Monday, said it had decided not to ask for the review of the verdict which ceded the oil-rich to neighbouring Cameroon in 2002.
PRONACO, in statement by its spokesperson, Mr. Olawale Okunniyi, on Tuesday, said the Federal Government betrayed the trust and confidence of Bakassi people by ‘an undemocratic decision’ inspite of the preference of the people to remain in the country.
He said, “We accuse the Nigerian government of timidity and conspiracy against the people of Bakassi imbued by ignorance of the rights of indigenous peoples in international politics, which they averred is backed by the United Nations Charter on self determination and political autonomy of organised nationalities and indigenous groups all over the globe.
“The FG erred in stating that there is no new fact to enable an appeal for judicial review of the ICJ judgment on Bakassi in spite of the international rights of the Bakassi people and the current demonstration of their interest and desire to remain in Nigeria instead of Cameroon.”
