FORMER Governor of Kwara State Bukola Saraki, Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi, and Comptroller General of Customs, Alhaji Dikko Abdullahi, were among Nigerians on Monday who continued to mourn the demise of Dr. Lateef Adegbite, who died on Friday at 79.

Others included the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria and The Muslim Congress.

Saraki, who is Chairman, Senate Committee on Ecology and Environment, said Adegbite, the late Secretary-General for the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, was a true patriot, who represented the symbol of peace in his life time.

In a statement, the ex-governor noted that Adegbite used his position as the NSCIA Secretary to foster unity and peaceful co-existence among Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

He said, “He was full of life and until his death, a strong advocate of religion tolerance. He will be missed by all Nigerians most especially the Muslim community.”

Ajimobi described the passage of Adegbite as a monumental loss to the Muslim community, the legal profession and Nigeria in general.

The governor, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Festus Adedayo in Ibadan on Monday, said the late legal icon lived his life for the unity and oneness of the country.

He said, “His death is highly unfortunate and disheartening, moreover at this critical time when the nation needs his spiritual counsel to tackle the myriads of problems currently confronting it.”

Also, Abdullahi described the death of Adebgite as a national loss.

A statement by his office on Monday in Abuja said Adebgite died when the nation needed “his peace making skills to create mutual understanding across tribal and religious divides.”

AUD, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alh. Muibi Adebayo, lamented that Adegbite’s death would be greatly felt in the development of Islam and peace keeping in the country.

In his condolence message, the National Missioner of the group, Sheik Abdur Rahman Ahmad, described the deceased as “a member worthy of emulations in the Nigeria Inter Religious Committee.”
