PDP chairmanship race :Dokpesi visits Makarfi, Yero; vows to end impunity

Monday, August 08, 2016

Interim chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has vowed to ensure level playing field during the national convention billed for Port Harcourt.

The former governor of Kaduna state disclosed this when a frontline aspirant for the chairmanship position of the party, High chief Raymond Dokpesi led members of his campaign team to his home in Kaduna.

In similar vein, the immediate past governor of the state, Alhaji Mukhtar Ramalan Yero,  has said that Dokpesi has the respect and trust of the people to lead the party, stating that he is the only aspirant contesting for the post that is consulting and meeting the delegates in their respective states. Yero said this when he hosted Dokpesi in his house.

Makarfi praised Dokpesi for embarking on the campaign tour, saying that it shows commitment and seriousness of the aspirant towards the convention. He urged delegates to the convention to assess aspirants for all the positions and vote people that have capacity and credibility to lead.

"You are an active participant by going to the delegates while some are passive participant. If people want a position they should go for it because it is open to all. There is no harm in sub zoning but it should not exclude others. That is why any aspirant interested in any position can pick form at our office without restriction unlike the previous one," he said.

He promised to ensure level playing ground and insisted that the race is open to all.

In his submission, former governor Yero said there is no reason why PDP members should not give Dokpesi the opportunity to lead the party because of his record and contributions. He said Dokpesi has given hope to members of the party by engaging in the tour.

" When this party lost election, people left but you have been in the struggle to bring the party back. When things were difficult for the party, you went out to reawaken the spirits of party faithful that PDP is not dead.  With how you started AIT and what it is today, I don't think any responsible person will doubt your capability and experience to lead the party. I am not in doubt of your capabilities. As at today, nobody has consulted widely like you. You have the respect and trust of the people because you have been meeting the delegates to ask for their votes. That is democracy and that is what PDP needs now. We don't want imposition. We will not disappoint you at the convention, especially considering the fact that our former party chairman in Kaduna, Chief Abubakar Gaiya Haruna is a member of your campaign team," he said.

Yero noted that the leaders of the party in the state, including former Vice President Nnamadi Sambo will consult with delegates before the convention.

He urged Dokpesi when elected as chairman to end impunity in the party and restore power to the people, adding that he should continue the tour after the convention.

Dokpesi said it is the tradition of his campaign team to pay courtesy visit on leaders of the party during his tour. He praised Senator Makarfi for giving the party purposeful leadership and positioning it for the convention during a period of crisis.

Dokpesi who lamented the reign of impunity that led to the failure of the party in the 2015 election, noted that PDP need a strong, purposeful and disciplined character to lead the party to winning way, especially in the face of persecution and dehumanizations of party members by the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
