Lagos canvasses investment in youths
The Special Adviser to the Lagos State governor on Education, Mr. Fatai Olukoga, has called on older generation to invest in youths by making conscious effort in re-orientating them.
Olukoga, who spoke on ‘youths and rotary ideals’ at a function organised by the Rotary International Club, District 9110, said the youth were the backbone of the nation.
He said, “Youths are those that will change the future of the society with their well-being and courageous behaviour. They are here to show us that which we have not been willing to look at within ourselves. We must catch them young by advising them, making socially aware and by telling them what is right and wrong.
“We must get control of this, we must motivate our youth, teach them responsibility and goal setting. I fear if we do not, we will soon be supporting an entire generation of no future. Things have to change with the older generation being good role models and mentors to these youths.”
He, however, advised the youth not to engage in activities that would frustrate the efforts of the older generation to enhance their development.
He added, “Unfortunately today, we find that our youth are more interested in things that are not useful to them as well as the nation. They choose to spend their days taking drugs and engaging in yahoo video games.
“They have no vision, and if they do have dreams, they do not have the drive to achieving them.”
The club’s District Governor, Mr. Kamoru Omotosho, urged stakeholders to invest their resources in the development of youths to enhance their future.
According to him, future of youths lies in the hands of every stakeholders and parents in the country.
He said, “We believe in the youth, that is why we have dedicated the month of September of every year as the new generation month of youth and young adult.”
