…group says restriction will increase crime
A non-governmental Organisation, African Youths Initiative on Crime Prevention, has advised the Lagos State Government to limit the restriction of okada operations to the major highways in the state.
The Executive Director of the group, Mr. Christogonus Ibe, said this during a press conference on AYICRIP’s forthcoming two-day National Youth Symposium on Crime Prevention Ambassador Awards.
He urged government to find better means of strengthening security rather than restricting okada operations for security reasons in the state.
He said, “Okada to a large extent has provided jobs and source of livelihood to a lot of young people. If they are to be restricted, there should be palliative measures to cushion the effect of unemployment in the state.
The banning will deepen sufferings and increase crimes in the state. The government should provide more security rather than punish the poor.
“The present state of insecurity in Nigeria calls for great concern as the human and social consequences are compelling.”
He urged the state government to embark on crime-prevention programmes that would change the mindset of youth for development.
He added, “The highest assets and resources of young people is their mindset, it is incumbent on us to always engage them through events by appealing to their conscience so as to direct them with objective programmes and activities that can bring about a positive change in our society.”
