One of the secondary school teachers who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday, in Ile-Ife, under anonymity said that majority of these students were not qualified for WAEC.
She said that students sat down for the final year Mock exam which would qualified them for the state government to pay for their WAEC examination on Dec 20-24 2015.
According to her, the exam sheet were distributed for teachers to mark on Jan 4, 2016, in which the result was out yesterday, noted that the students performed woefully.
ANCORPS held meeting on the low performance of the students and agreed that they should call Parent-Teachers Association (PTA) meeting.
During the meeting, Principals notified the parents on the number of students that passed, adding that government has decided not to pay for those that failed.
According to ANCOPPS, government has mandated that those that failed should pay N14,500 for science, while Arts and Commercial students would pay N14, 050 between Thursday and Monday.
One of the students (name withheld) said that they were not protesting because of the mass failure.
She said that their protest was because some of the names sent from government as successful students were not qualified, even 95% of them did not sat for the exam.
Secondly, the time mandated for their parents to pay for their WAEC is too shortened, where do government expect their parents to get such amount of money from Thursday till Monday?.
"After all, the state government stated payment of half salaries to the state workers since July and nothing was paid from December till date". Students added.
The State Council Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ),Mr Abiodun Olalere, when visited "Orisun FM" which was vandalised by the protested students said that what happened was bad and unfortunates.
Olalere stated that if the student have any grievances, they should have channel it to the appropriate channel rather than destroying individual and government property.
He added that even the staff of "Orisun" that the students transferred their aggression to have their own challenges.
