Ooni-Of-Ife

The race on the family to produce the next Ooni of Ife has become very keen as all the families entitled to the throne have claimed ‎right to produce the needed candidate.

Apart from the Giesi and Lafogido families, the Ogboru and Osinkola have also shown interest. While Giesi lay their backing to 1980 Chieftaincy Declaration; Lafogido base on tradition; Ogboru claimed the last Ooni was not the family's candidate and Osinkola traced variation.

Recently, the Lafogido family alleged that it was the slot of Giesi that the late Oba Sijuwade Okunade II used.

Also, the Ogboru claimed that though the late Sijuwade was from the family, his candidature was not through the family but personal effort.

On its part, the Osinkola Ruling House disagreed with the Giesi and Ogboru and Lafogido Ruling Houses, saying the stool was vacant for any family to fill.

It said that despite producing the late Oba Adesoji Aderemi, who ruled before Oba Okunade Sijuwade, who died on July 28, the family produced the least number of the Ooni among the four ruling houses.‎

The Osinkola family said it produced Osinkola had produced four Ooni; the Lafogido had produced eight; Ogboru five and Giesi five.

The family also claimed to be the most senior of the four ruling houses.

The leader of the Osinkola Ruling House, Prince Olakunle Aderemi, in a press conference, on Wednesday, noted that the family would field candidates for the stool because its children were qualified to join the race.

Aderemi said, "Ife Chieftaincy Declaration of 1980 technically throws open the contest for filling the stool of Ooni. The provision in paragraph six of 1980 Chieftaincy Declaration had cancelled the provision in paragraph five of Ife Chieftaincy Declaration of 1957.

"Osinkola Ruling House is one of the four ruling houses entitled to nominate candidate or candidates for the filling of the vacant stool of the Ooni. Osinkola Ruling House comprises five male branches from which candidate or candidates can be nominated for the vacant stool."

The secretary of the family, Prince Bade Adeyemo, said six contestants had shown interest from the ruling house.

Meanwhile, the royal families said they were awaiting a letter from the king-makers to notify them on the next family to produce successor of the Ooni stool.

When contacted, a member of the Lafogido said, "We met recently and the head of the family did not say he has gotten any letter of notification."
