Governor-Rauf-Aregbesola

Following the recent stoppage of free education programme by the Oyo State government which is under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Osun State governor, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, has been warned against the stopping of the free education policy of his administration.

Chairman, Civil Societies Coalition for the Emancipation of Osun State (CSCEO), Mr. Adeniyi Sulaiman, gave the warning, while alleging that Aregbesola led-administration was also planning to stop the payment of West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) fees and development levies.

He said the warning became imperative because of the financial status of the state, noting that they would support Aregbesola to stop free education policy of his administration, if he could retain the payment of WAEC fees and non-payment of developmental levies by parents and guardians in public secondary schools in the state.

He appealed to the state government to give recognition and priority to the provision of the running cost to the both Primary and Post-Primary schools, training and re-training of the teachers, incentives to the teachers, and reconstruction of schools.‎

Sulaiman said: "We are warning Mr. Aregbeosla not to remove payment of development levy from Secondary Schools and also to continue the payment of West African Examination Council (WAEC) of the Secondary School Students, due to the present poor level of income earning of the people of the state.

"The people of Osun state needs to be educated that basic education has been free and compulsory programme of the federal government through UBEC/SUBEB partners to fund basic education in Nigeria, and no state government in Nigeria could lay claim to be doing free education of the Primary schools to the Junior Secondary Schools(JSS) in Nigeria.

"Let's inform the public that information at our disposal has it that Mr. Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola has concluded arrangement to follow his Oyo state counterpart, to stop payment of WAEC fees and ordered the payment of developmental levy at the wake of the criminal and reckless financial mismanagement of the state fund by Aregbesola and his allies."

Aregbesola was also accused of owing primary school teachers to the tune of four months now after their salaries had been released by federal government till the month of July, 2015.
