Toyota invests in creativity through film
Toyota Nigeria Limited has invested in creativity by funding a film titled, ‘October 1st’ as part of its corporate social responsibilities.
The Executive Director, TNL, Mr. Kunle Ade-Ojo, at a press conference in Lagos on Monday, noted that it was necessary to support the creativity industry to enable it to grow.
He explained that the support was in line with the Federal Government’s initiative to boost the film industry with needed funds.
He said, “Creativity is something that we have always been interested in and we feel a lot is lacking in the sector. As far as we are concerned, most of those engaged in creative art don’t get enough backing. Being a socially responsible organisation, we are interested in this and we want to see the industry grow beyond where it is currently. That is one of the reasons why we are supporting creative people.
“For us, it is more about the support; there is no monetary gain for us. It is to just support the industry and ensure its survival. We are aware of what the President did some years ago when they made a budget for the industry as a means of supporting it. The industry has been lacking for too long and we feel that the person behind the film is a top brand who can be invested in.”
Ade-Ojo also urged governments at all levels to support creativity, adding that it would promote the image of the country.
“I will expect the Nigerian government and other stakeholders to take a cue from what we are doing. Government should encourage the initiative because in other markets, we know how big the creative industry is; but in Nigeria, the market is not. Here, it still needs to get better and that can only be achieved with the support of everybody,” he added.
The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatude Fashola, who was represented at the briefing by Mr. Aderemi Desalu, commended Toyota for the gesture and urged other companies in the country to extend their CSR to creative activities.
He said, “This kind of initiative will help to project the image of the country. If other states and companies can support initiatives like this, Nigeria film industry will improve and will be able to compete globally.”
The Executive Director of the project, Mr. Kunle Afolayan, said, “The film examines the history of different tribes in the country. It reminds us of our history, challenges and proffer solutions. I appeal to other corporate organisations to invest in it.”
