Experts proffer ways of sustaining stable electricity

As a means to ensure stability of electricity in the country, engineers and experts have suggested that Nigeria should deploy alternative ways of generating energy.

They noted that research into the fields of material science and technology, waste management and stoppage of charcoal among others would aid alternative sources of energy like Bio-gas, solar power, wind and water power.

The suggestions were contained in a report made available on Wednesday after an international technical visit/tour of Sweden, Denmark and Netherlands by delegates from Nigerian Society of Engineers, Abuja branch led by Engr Yakubu Ali Garba.

According to the report signed by the host and Chief Executive Officer of Edufinder Limited, which is a subsidiary of Edulutions Limited, Mr. Adrian Ajala, the tour aided opportunities for valuable business interactions with young European entrepreneurs.

Quoting the report, Ajala said, "Nigerian companies and government can explore the numerous opportunities for technology transfer and acquisition in the areas of alternative renewable energy sources, Environmental protection, pollution control, water resources engineering and the maritime sector.

"Research into the fields of material science and technology is one sure way to advance development in the fields of energy, environmental technology, Information Communication Technology, health, biotechnology, agriculture and climate. This research would provide new insights to the behaviour of particle matter; superconductivity of materials like magnesium bromide could aid the distribution of electricity with little or no energy loss from resistivity."

While regretting the current situation of electricity in Nigeria, the experts urged that policies of government should be deliberately geared towards moving the country away from total reliance on fossil fuels.

He added, "Power is yet to be stable and adequate. Transportation infrastructure is in a critically poor state, hampering productive activities in agriculture and commerce. Consequently, competent human capital is in steady flight out of the shores of the country to more favourable climate for productive endeavour.

"The practice of collecting solid waste in municipalities and disposing them in land-fills should be reconsidered. Other more sustainable and environmentally friendly means of managing waste should be explored. This includes waste-to-energy plants that can convert the latent energy in waste to Bio- gas, heat and electricity. Recycling and re-use of waste should also be pursued.
"The use of firewood and charcoal for cooking by the rural and urban poor should be replaced by better and less hazardous solutions. Agricultural by-products and waste like rice husks saw dust, pea nut shells etc., can be processed and pelletized for use in stoves for cooking. It is currently being done in Zambia."

Ajala, however, recalled that during aan Engineering Study ‎visit facilitated by Edulutions in May, a former Nigerian Ambassador to Netherlands, Dr. (Mrs) Nimota Akanbi challenged the NSE delegates to transfer the human resources which Nigeria is blessed with to technological advancement.

Programmes Director of Edulutions Limited, Mr Shams O'Muyiwa, said the company was more interested in ensuring that Nigeria makes effective use of her resources.

He insisted that the UK based company was determined to bring revolutionary technical solutions through empowerment, education, employment and social development to Nigerians.

He said many more trips are scheduled to take Nigerian professionals on study tours of Europe in 2016.
