Group disburses N41m for charities
The Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation has distributed about N41m for empowerment and welfare support for the less privileged people and communities.
The Executive Director of the group, Abdullahi Shuaib, who spoke at the eighth Zakat (Charity) distribution on Tuesday, said the initiative was to boost the economy of the beneficiaries.
He said, “We were able to collect N41, 168,930 as Zakat in 2012, out of which we have distributed N5, 707,269 outside Lagos State in the last three weeks. Today, we are disbursing N35, 461, 661 to over 700 beneficiaries in Lagos alone. All these are made possible by the Zakat payers.
“This is part of our contributions to create an enabling environment, boost our economy, provide qualitative educational and medical supports for the teeming and the rising youth population in the country.”
He explained that it was necessary for government at all levels to ensure equitable distribution of resources for even development.
“On the front burner of the foundation is the need for equitable distribution of resources which is one of the cardinal objectives for eradicating poverty. We believe that if this is pursued vigorously to complement the efforts of the governments at all levels, it will engender peace in the federation.
While commending the charity donors, he urged Nigerians to sustain the ideals of enriching the poor and caring for humanity.
He added, “We are pleased to partner with relevant faith-based organisations and government agencies at all levels. The economic empowerment of the poor stands out in terms of areas that funds were allotted.
“Already, we have sunk boreholes powered by three standby generators to the Migbewe Ago-Egun Community in Makoko; many had received deep freezers, generators, laptops, accommodation, while some beneficiaries go home with tricycle (Keke Marwa), refrigerators, generators and sew-machines among others.”
The chairman of the group, Sulayman Olagunju, noted the foundation had demonstrated a great sense of commitment and dedication by transforming the lives of paupers in Lagos State and Nigeria.
