Akpabio faults calls for Governors Forum’s ban

Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio
Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom, has faulted calls for the banning of the Nigerian Governors Forum.
The forum, he said,  was important to the promotion of good governance in the country.

Akpabio stated this in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, on Sunday.

He urged Nigerians to be well disposed to the forum to enhance its efficiency.

He said, “The forum principally is an interactive one. The stability of democracy in the country is uppermost in its agenda. The forum helps in deepening democracy, ensuring good governance, tackling the challenges of security, decayed infrastructure and Peer Review Mechanism, among others.”

Former Minister of Information, Chief Edwin Clark, had last week canvassed the banning of the forum, saying it was a threat to the nation’s democracy.

Also, two opposition political parties, African Renaissance Party and the All Nigeria Peoples Party, called on the National Assembly to begin the process of banning the forum.

The parties said the current disposition of the forum was inimical to the development of democracy in the country.

Meanwhile, Akpabio also commended President Goodluck Jonathan’s efforts in the repair of the East Way Road in the South-South.

He asked, ‘‘How much was budgeted for the road by the National Aseembly? I thank the ministry for always budgeting for the road on a yearly basis. At the moment, there is increased tempo of work on the road. I urge NDDC and contractors to continue with the pace of work.”
