Group blames increased robberies on cyclists’ restriction

A non-governmental organisation, Mainland Youth Movement, has said the restriction of operations of commercial motocyclists popularly called okada riders, contributed to the rising crime rate in Ebute Meta area of Lagos.

The president of the group, Mr. Amodu Shehu, in a statement on Monday, added that the residents had been battling with a series of crimes since government restricted the operations of okada riders in about 479 roads.

He said, “We must state categorically that since the restriction of okada riders, crime has drastically increased in Ebute Meta. Every day we hear of one robbery or the other in one street or the other.

“Banning okada has contributed to high crime rate. Our life is dear to us and we can no longer sleep with our two eyes closed.

“Many residents have lost their property to incessant robbery, some have been injured and some killed.”

Shehu urged the government to provide an alternative that could be easily accessed by the embattled riders and youths to prevent them from partaking in unlawful acts.
