Economic recession affecting provision of essential services - OAU VC ‎

Thursday, September 29, 2016

The acting Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Prof. Anthony Elujoba, has lamented the adverse effect of economic recession on effective running of the institution.

He said this while delivering an address at the 2015/2016 academic session matriculation ceremony for the 7,500 students admitted into the OAU.

The acting VC, who was represented by the Chairman, Committee of Dean, Prof. Adeagbo Amusan, assured the newly admitted students of welfarism despite the recession.

He appealed to the students to ensure proper usage of municipal facilities to reduce cost of administration at the challenging period.‎

He said, "Your admission to the university coincides with a period of obvious economic recession in the country. The implication is that funds are not readily available for provisions of municipal and other essential services. However, I assure you of our readiness to continue to ensure that issues affecting students welfare are addressed as prompt as possible within the limited resources.

"As the university is ever willing to go the extra mile to make you succeed in your studies and other legitimate endeavours, you are also under obligation to make judicious use of all the resources that are provided. Use municipal facilities responsibly."

The acting VC also sought the cooperation of the newly admitted students to achieve a crisis-free academic session.

He lamented that the university's bad reputation for being the university that closes down for more times than it was opened.

He said, "The university administration is working assiduously to regain its lost, as the academic calendar needs to be brought back on track. To be able to do this, we all must be on our toes, fasten our belts and be committed to ensuring a crisis-free session.

"While like the other first generation universities in a cash-strapped exonomy like ours, the university has its own share of the problems; our university still has many selling points. We solicit for your understanding and co-operation in order to redeem our public image."

Elujoba warned the students against any form of anti social behaviours that could truncate their studentship.

"The university has a zero tolerance for cultism, examination malpractices, violent behavious and sexual harassment. I will advice you to stay away away from these and other similar vices in order not to truncate your studentship or get into serious trouble with the law of the land," he added.
