Jonathan's ineptitude led Nigeria to economic comatose - Rights Activist

Friday, August 12, 2016

A renowned Human Rights activist and Director, Ola Oni Centre for Social Research, Comrade Wale Adebisi, has attributed the plethora of challenges facing the country to lack of political will and administrative wherewithal of the erstwhile administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.

The rights activist also attributed the conspicuous deficiencies and ineptitude being characterized with Jonathan' administration as the major factor to the present economic woes.

Comrade Adebisi made the statement during an interactive session with our correspondent in Osogbo.

The rights activist who condemned in clear terms the way and manner at which the ousted administration condoned monumental corruption and impunity, said what the nation was experiencing was a product of bad governance in the past.

Enumerating some of the challenges facing the country, Comrade Adebisi said though Nigeria is running monolithic economy but if the nation has been blessed with good leadership, the country wouldn't have been drifted to the current tribulation.

According to him, "although Nigeria is a consumer nation, it does not produce what it consumes, while Nigerians rely mostly on importation of every consumable item and foreign things to survive.

"Truly, we relied on foreign exchange that comes from the sales of the crude oil. And by the time the prices of the crude oil fell globally at the international market and we could not get enough to exchange for importation of all our consumable items, Nigeria's economy therefore ran into recession.

"But in real sense, the major reason for the current economic recession is the monumental fraud particularly from the previous administration. This unchecked corruption under the former administration of President Goodluck Jonathan led Nigeria to economic comatose because most monies that were supposed to be injected into the economy were siphoned and laundered overseas.

"This immoral act has contributed in no small measures to the present economic situation", he added.

Comrade Adebisi who commended the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari for waging serious war against corruption by re-energizing the anti-graft agencies towards ensuring incorruptible society, suggested further massive campaigns against institutional corruption in the country.

According to him, all the efforts being put in place to fight corruption can never be successful, if the president failed to expedite serious campaigns against the palpable scourge of institutional corruption.

Comrade Adebisi pointed out that the more the President tries to fight corruption, corruption tries to fight back, simply because the monster of corruption had spread across the institutional system of the nationhood.

He said, "What we have in Nigeria surpasses individual corruption, it is an institutional corruption. What I mean by this is that some of the institutions that can help to fight corruption are acting corruptly by one way or the other. For instance, the judiciary that one can take corruption cases to has been severally alleged of acting corruptly.

"The same thing goes to legislative and executive arms of government as cases of corruption have become order of the day in all facets of our economy".

On the issue of either tracking corrupt people or fighting corruption, Comrade Adebisi attributed what the president has been doing so far to what he described as tracking corruption not fighting corruption.

He said what Nigeria needs at the moment is a serious campaign against corruption especially the institutional corruption that has hindered the economic growth and development of the country.

"What we are experiencing now is to track down the looters and ensure that we recover the loots but to fight corruption, it has to be inform of massive campaign and advocacy to the doorsteps of every Nigerian where our institutions emanated. This action is beyond tracking down the corrupt people but warning people against the danger it portends if one found wanting of corrupt practices.

"Once this campaign cut across every sector, it will serve as a way of redefining, reforming and restructuring the kind of society that we are today.

The rights activist said as part of efforts to fight corruption, government must strengthen the constitution so as to instill the widely aspired sanity in the country.

"We need active laws and the institutions to enforce those laws so as for us to have a corruption free society.

"Government has to show more seriousness and step-up campaigns through properly constituted judiciary to champion the aspirations of Nigerians towards the attainment of corrupt reduced society", he stated.
