Osun lecturers declare indefinite strike over sack of colleagues

Thursday, January 21, 2016

Lecturers, under the aegis of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics and College of Education Academic Staff Union (ASUP and COEASU) ‎have declared an indefinite strike action.

The strike action was announced on Monday in a letter addressed to Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

It would be recalled that the Osun State Government, last week, reportedly sacked no fewer than 141 lecturers in the state.

The lecturers said the strike was press home demands such as ‎reversal or stoppage of admission and all decisions made, ratified and/or co-ordinated by the Governing Council as presently constituted (without statutory representatives) from October 29, 2015 up to date and hereafter including, but not necessarily limited to, the on-going termination of appointments.

Others were ‎total fulfilment of the agreement of October 29, 2015 and stoppage of continuous payment of amputated salaries.

The letter read in part, "The Congresses of our Great Unions (ASUP and COEASU) have resolved to embark on an indefinite total strike action, inter alia, with immediate effect.

"In our last letter to Mr. Governor, we issued a 'Notice of Last Resort' in which we implored Mr. Governor to avert a looming industrial crisis by addressing the festering issues.

"Unfortunately, while we were expecting the response of the government, letters of termination of appointment were suddenly issued to several members of staff to worsen the situation.‎"

In the letter titled, "Synthesis of ASUP/COEASU Congress Resolution: Declaration of Total Strike Action", the workers alleged that the agreement that made it to suspend its previous strike action remained unfulfilled.‎ It is, therefore, highly demoralising that the agreement remains unfulfilled; and, as if that is not enough, our endurance has been stretched to the limits by recent developments – including the unlawful stoppage of admission and wrongful termination of appointments orchestrated by illegal Governing Councils in the most flagrant disregard for the statutes of our institutions and the standards set by our regulatory bodies, namely, the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE)", the bodies said.

Meanwhile, a civil society organisation (CSO) under the aegis of Civil Societies Coalition for the Emancipation of Osun State (CSCEO), has frowned upon Aregbesola over the alleged illegal sacked of so many lecturers.

It also supported the decision of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, to join the ongoing strike as part of their solidarity to their colleagues in the state civil service.

This was contained in a statement issued and signed by the CSCEO's Chairman, Comrade Adeni Sulaiman, a copy of which was made available to newsmen in Osogbo, on Monday.

It however, threw its weight behind the on-going strike embarked upon by the medical doctors under the aegis of Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) and their counterparts, Osun State Association of Medical and Dental Officers (OSAMDO).
