Yoruba unity tops Ooni, Afenifere meeting
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi Ojaja II and the Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG) have expressed concern over the disunity among Yoruba people.
They made known their view during a visit by members of the ARG to the Ooni at the Oduduwa Palace in Ile-Ife, Osun State.
According to the Ooni, peace remained an important ingredient that for Nigeria, especially the Yoruba race to grow.
The monarch explained that one of the major things he sets to achieve during his reign was unity, and emphasized that that would be achieved by working with other leaders in Yoruba land.
He said, "I have been praying to God for unity among the Yoruba race and in Yoruba land as a whole because our unity is germane to the progress of the world. The Yoruba people are gifted and will always make impact anywhere they go. However, there has recently been a challenge on who will sacrifice by leading to resolve crisis among the Yoruba people, mostly as a result of our bravery.
"Love and unity among Yoruba people will bring about many positive things. It is time for unity to return to Nigeria and we must all return to the source to achieve it. If we forget our source, we may go astray. To bring love, I have decided to work with leaders in Yoruba land.
"Growth is not difficult in Yoruba land; unity is the challenge. With my emergence, unity is returning to Ife and it is gradually spreading to other places across Yorubaland."
On his part, the head of ARG delegation, Olawale Osun, said one of the foci of the meeting was to look into how unity can return to Yoruba land and the development of Yoruba land during Oba Ogunwusi's tenure.
He challenged traditional rulers to work for the peace of the Yoruba people both in the country and in the diaspora, and noted that peace should be their core responsibility.
Osun said that, "It is important that across the Yoruba-speaking area that there should be unity. When there is unity, there will be peace, and when there is peace, you can facilitate development.
"We are interested in the development of our people. We want to stop managing rancour; we want to manage development and growth. We want peace and not rancour that cannot enhance progress."
