Police in Osun State has arraigned a 30-year-old man, Mr Adedoyin Tadese before an Osogbo magistrate court for snatching 1.5 million naira from Mr Akeeb Abiodun in front of the Osogbo branch of Sterling bank.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Oladoye Joshua told the court that Tadese snatched the money from Akeeb on 5th of July, 2013 and escaped with the money but he was later apprehended and handed over to the police.
The prosecutor added that Tadese was asked to return the money to the owner but the accused person could only return #100,000 out of the total sum of 1.5 million naira he snatched.
When Tadese was brought before the magistrate on Wednesday, he was charged with one count of stealing as contained in his charge sheet. He, however, pleaded not guilty to the offence.
The prosecutor told the court that Tadese committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume 2, Laws of Osun State, 2013.
The owner of the money who was also at the court begged the magistrate to assist him to retrieve his money from Tadese instead of remanding him in prison.
The presiding judge, Magistrate Olusola Aluko assured Akeeb that the court would assist him to get his money. Magistrate Aluko later asked Tadese to state when and how he would repay the money.
Tadese in response promised to pay 200,000 on April 8, 2016 as first instalment and then pay the rest of the money gradually as time goes on.
Magistrate Aluko reprimanded the accused and warned him to ensure that he repay the money without further delay. He then adjourned the matter to April 8, 2016 for further hearing.
