Deportations Will Affect APC’s Acceptance in East – Igbo Group
An Igbo group, Aka Ikenga has
condemned the deportation of people regarded as beggars and destitute
from Lagos to Onitsha, Anambra State.
Lagos State Government on Monday deported 67 beggars and destitute and dropped them off at the Upper Iweka Bridge, Onitsha, Anambra State.
But the president of the group, Chief Goddy Uwazurike in a press briefing on Thursday in Lagos said the deportation was against sections 35 and 41 of the 1999 Nigeria Constitution.
Uwazurike maintained that if necessary steps were not taken by the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), the newly registered All Progressives Party would be wrongly perceived in the East and the Nigeria at large.
He said: “Everything that happens in one government affects another like what is happening in Lagos now about those who are deported will definitely affect the perception of APC in Igbo lands and even Nigeria. That is why I want the governor to be careful of some of his actions because I am sure this will not be the way he wants to reward over 90 percent of Igbos in Lagos that voted for him.
“It will affect the chances unless they take steps to would amend the situation. As a matter of fact Lagosians are very hospitable and do not really do anything to obstruct other people who reside here. But from time to time, some ruffians get into one position or the other in the government agencies and use it to give vent to their hitherto hidden animalistic tendencies. Such people end up messing up the well intended government policies.”
While describing the development as a criminal and inhuman act, Uwazurike lamented that the method of operation of the KAI (Kick Against Indiscipline) was worrisome.
He said: “To add insult to injury, these same unfortunate people, who have learnt the wisdom that the fear of KAI is the beginning of wisdom, are surreptitiously driven at night out of Lagos and dumped at the Bridge Head in Onitsha Anambra State.
“This was done in September last year and again this July 2013. What is your intention in dumping them there? Are they from Anambra State? Even if they are from Anambra State, is it not both a criminal and an inhuman act? Mr Iraboh, one of the detainees, found himself now stranded in Onitsha! Is he from Anambra State? So it is with many other people.”
