PLANE CRASH INTO HOUSES IN LAGOS

Sunday, June 03, 2012

A McDonnell Douglas MD-83 passenger plane crashed into a two-story building at a Lagos suburb. Dana Air flight 9J-997 was completely destroyed as it crashed killing all 147 passengers and 6 crew members on board.
The MD-83 Plane
The MD-83 is a longer range development of the basic MD-81/82 with higher weights, more powerful engines, increased fuel capacity and longer range.
Powerplant: Compared to earlier models, its Powerplant is equipped with slightly more powerful 21,000 lbf (93 kN) thrust Pratt and Whitney JT8D-219s as standard.
On performance, it features increased fuel capacity as standard (to 6,970 US gal) which is carried in two 565 US gallons auxiliary tanks located fore and aft of the centre section. The aircraft also has higher operating weights, with MTOW increased to 160,000 lb and MLW to 139,500 lb. Typical range for the MD-83 with 155 passengers is around 2,504 nautical miles (4,637 km). To cope with the higher operating weights, the MD-83 incorporates strengthened landing gear including new wheels, tires and brakes, changes to the wing skins, front spar web and elevator spar cap and strengthened floor beams and panels to carry the auxiliary fuel tanks. However, from MD-80 line number 1194, an MD-81 delivered in September 1985, it is understood that all MD-80s have the same basic wing structure and in theory could be converted to MD-83 standard.
The MD-83  was announced and given a go-ahead on January 31, 1983, with its first flight on December 17, 1984.
It got the Federal Aviation Administration certification on October 17, 1985 (MTOW 149,500 lb). MTOW of 160,000 lb certificated November 4, 1985.
The MD-83s brand was first delivered on  February, 1985 to Alaska Airlines - initially as -82 powered by -217A engines and certificated as MD-82s. Alaska Airlines' first four aircraft were subsequently re-engined and re-certificated as MD-83s.
By February, 1985 it entered into service with Alaska Airlines and was last delivered on December 28, 1999 to TWA.
Also, the Dornier Aviation Nigeria AIEP Airlines (sometimes referred to as Dana Air) - one of the newest airlines in Nigeria and a subsidiary of the 30-year old Dana Group uses the MD-83s .
Dana Air began operating in 2008 and is based in Lagos. Dana Air's fleet of aircraft are mostly Boeing MD83 aircraft which are larger than the planes operated by the other leading carriers.
Kaduna State based DANA Aviation company, which sold the Dornier aircraft to the Nigerian Air Force(NAF), also maintains the fleet for her. Dornier 228 plane is fairly common in Nigeria. Its owners include Dornier Aviation Nigeria AIEP( DANA) which has 12 planes, the Nigerian Air Force(NAF) with eight, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Power Holding Company of Nigeria(PHCN) with one each.
With the Dana Air, Nigeria was hit by major tragedy on September. 17, when an 18-seater Dornier 228 Air Force transport plane, carrying 15 senior army officers and three crew members crashed leaving only three survivors that sustained serious injuries.
The plane has a registration number 228-212 crashed in northern part of the country at Oko village in Vandeikya local government area of Benue State at about 10:30 a.m.

The crash is the second major air disaster involving top military officers in the country. On September 26 , 1992, a Nigerian Air Force C-130 transport plane carrying top military officers crashed in Ejigbo near Lagos, minutes after leaving Lagos airport. All passengers died in the crash, 173 bodies were found, 27 missing.
The plane departed Abuja in the early morning hours of September 17, on its way to Obudu Cattle Ranch in Cross River State where the officers were to hold a retreat.
Major Generals which have lost their lives in the Dana Airline are Major General A.N. Bamali - GOC 2 Division - from Kano State; Major General J.O. Adesunloye - GOC 81 Division - from Edo State; Major General J.O. Agboola - Military Secretary - from Osun State; Major General P.M. Haruna - Commandant, Army Signal Corps; Major General J.T.U.
