IGP vows to recover Gworza from insurgents
The Acting Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has vowed that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) under his administration would do everything to recover Gworza.
He said this at the passing-out parade of Police Mobile Force Squadron Commanders Seminar/Combat Operation Course 03/2016, held at the Police Mobile Force Training College, Ila-Orangun, Osun State.
According to him, the police have been unable to make use of the Gworza Police Training school because of the activities of insurgents.
"This event is coming at a very crucial time when the present administration of Buhari is determined to build a police force capable of combating emerging security challenges of national concern such as kidnapping, militancy, insurgency, terrorism, communal clashes, cattle rustling and a host of other organised crimes. We are making drastic effort to recover Gworza and we shall," he added.
The police boss also expressed willingness to support the anti-corruption fight by President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.
This, he said, necessitated ordering all Commissioned Officers from the rank of an Assistant Superintendent of Police to the Inspector-General of Police to declare their assets.
He subsequently ordered that the use of mobile police men as bodyguards to politicians and other unauthorised individuals should stop.
Idris specifically ordered that all the mobile policemen deployed to unauthorised beats or attached to individuals be withdrawn with immediate effect.
The police boss stated that cases of corruption and favouritism would be severely dealt with under him.
The IGP said, "We are restructuring the police force. As commanders of the operational arm of the force, it is of utmost importance that you display a high sense of professionalism by ensuring that your personnel are appropriately deployed to authorised persons only. On this premise, all personnel deployed to unauthorised beats/ individuals should be withdrawn immediately, for policemen are not body guards.
"This initiative is aimed at checking the activities of corrupt practices and deterring others from indulging in corrupt practices. Corruption is a canker worm which has been identified as the most critical factor holding the Nigeria Police back from the path of quality and professional service delivery. Past administration has done so much to tackle corruption and ensure that the force is riddled of a few misguided elements bringing infamy upon the image of the force.
"This administration hopes to consolidate on this solidly built foundation and ensure that the root cause of this virus is fought to a standstill by frontally engaging the IGP monitoring unit and X-squad to checkmate officers nationwide with a view to enforcing accountability, transparency and discipline among officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force."
Osun State governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, urged the police to build relationship with people in the local community for effective policing.
He expressed optimism that the police force would witness good reformation under the new IGP.
