OAU students fume over Osinbajo's absence at lecture

FEBRUARY 5, 2015 BY SODIQ OYELEKE, ILE-IFE

Students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, have expressed anger over the absence of Vice-Presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, at an interactive session in Ile-Ife on Thursday.

The students were expecting Osinbajo at the session organised by OAU Campus Connect Initiative but the APC candidate sent representatives.

It was alleged that Osinbajo's representatives arrived the campus at about 12.10pm for a programme that was supposed to start by 10am.

Ostensibly angered by the absence of Osinbajo, the hosts and other students started trooping out of the venue of the programme, shouting 'no' repeatedly.

It was learnt that the 2,000-seater hall, which was filled to the brim, was left with about 150 students and three persons on the high table.

The aggrieved students claimed that their school was known for learning and culture, arguing t‎hat Osinbajo would have communicated to them earlier that he was no longer coming.

They lamented that they shunned classes and other academic activities for the interactive session.

"All these politicians should know that we hate to be taken for granted. We are trained to be cultured and we like to show respect but we don't condone indiscipline. We understand ‎he might have been held down by one or two things, but we should have been informed earlier," one of the aggreived students said.

Another student added, "Almost everyone is angry. We stabbed our classes and felt that we should honour him with our presence but he fumbled. You can imagine the large turnout of students. He really needs to apologise to the students."‎

While addressing the scanty hall, Dr. Dotun Ogunyemi‎, one of the representatives of Osinbajo, said the education sector would receive higher boost if APC was voted into power.

He explained to the students that APC presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, was qualified to contest.

According to him, Buhari met all the constitutional requirements, including that of education.

He said, "Our education system is lagging behind and that accounts for the reason why a lot of people find it difficult to gain admission. Osinbajo says I should tell you that when APC gets to power, education will be given a pivotal attention."
