Group wants women in leadership positions

OCTOBER 8, 2014 BY SODIQ OYELEKE

A group, The Aware Women Centre, has urged key actors in private and public institutions to give women a chance to display their leadership skills.

The group said corruption would reduce in Nigeria if women were allowed in top leadership positions.

The initiator and founder of the group, Dr.Winifred Awosika, said this during the inauguration of the Aware Women Centre.

Awosika said allowing women in leadership role would aid industrial growth and nation building.

She said, "Women should be allowed in leadership position. I will like to see a change in our political terrain. Honest people should be in power and if they give women the chance, women will perform very well. There's corruption everywhere, a few women can be caught up with it but the majority rise above it. Corruption will decrease whenever women lead.

"We build the homes, we build the society. This is the time for women to exhibit that love in their heart and the love is powerful because it's the women's tool and it is a tool we can use to change Nigeria and the world. Organisations are faced with leadership challenge which women can solve with their God-given gift. We should be allowed to bring positive changes."

Awosika decried the sidelining of women in some important leadership decisions, describing that as oppression.

She added, "Women have been oppressed over the years. Their energies have been suppressed for so long. That is why women are coming forward to take their proper places in the affairs of the world and nobody can stop that from happening.

"A very wise male leader, who acknowledges the positive role of women, is likely to be more successful as a leader than the one, who oppresses women. He will have more peace around himself and more joy in his activities and responsibilities."
