AOCOED Workers Heighten Protest, Paralyse Academic Activities

Mu'Sodiq Adekunle

Academic activities remain paralysed at the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCOED), Ijanikin, following an indefinite strike action embarked upon by staff of the institution.

Members of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), Senior Staff Union and Non-academic Staff Union Thursday engaged in another protest, which obstructed free flow of traffic on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

The protest, which began at 8.30am, had placard-carrying members displaying messages that included: Bashorun Must Go; Governor Fashola, Help Our Pensioners And Retirees; It Is Criminal Not To Remit Our Tax And Pension To The Appropriate Quarters; Our Pensioners Are Dying, Give Them Their Pension; Give Us Our 17 Months Pension.
The union also wants Governor Fashola to urgently come to the aid of the institution's clinic, saying the structure poses a threat to members of the AOCOED community.
Chairman of COEASU, Comrade Michael Avosetiyen, said that the union would continue with the protest pending when government is ready to take up its responsibility.
The workers are protesting non-payment of wages, non-remittance of pensions and cooperative fund, and poor funding of the institution.
He said: "As I am talking to you now, the management of this institution has not been able to remit over N150 million to different co-operative societies in the school. It is disheartening that pensioners are yet to access their pensions. The same thing is happening right now to those who are still in service and if we don't make bold steps to address these issues, we would also suffer the fate of the retirees.
Avosetiyen added: "We are teachers' trainers, and that shows we are building the society. If government continues this way, the future of this country is bleak and moribund."
In her appeal to Fashola, Chairman of the Senior Staff Union, Wunmi Ombugadu, said: "The staff clinic is a gigantic structure built with faulty foundation. In building, safety comes first, but the people that constructed that building did not consider safety. We are therefore, pleading to the governor to come and see the building and do the appropriate thing."
