Violence in Ife as PDP, APC supporters clash

AUGUST 12, 2014 BY FEMI MAKINDE, ALLWELL OKPI AND SODIQ OYELEKE

Crisis erupted in Ile-Ife in Osun State on Monday as some persons believed to be supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party launched a violent attack on members of the ruling All Progressives Congress who were celebrating the victory of Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

The crisis in Ife triggered a fresh patrol of Osogbo streets by heavily armed soldiers and operatives of the Department of State Service.

Our correspondents gathered that some APC's supporters. who were celebrating Aregbesola's victory in Ife had put canopies on the road, hindering the free passage of other roads users.

The stoppage of free flow of traffic was said to have triggered altercation between the two groups. The crisis snowballed into a free-for-all but normalcy was restored by soldiers who took control before it could degenerate.

Another resident of Ife told our correspondent that APC supporters who were celebrating gave a directive that a market should not be opened to allow for jubilation.

The 'directive' was said to have angered some supporters of the PDP who flouted it.

Their effrontery, it was learnt, was visited with an attack and those in support of the PDP also fought back.

It was gathered that the fight started around 2.30pm but the quick intervention of security personnel to the area restored peace.

The crisis was said to have occurred at Itaogun, which links Aderemi Road.

There was a rumour that one person was killed and some others were injured in the fight where broke

n bottles and other dangerous weapons were used.

Our correspondent, who visited the scene of the crisis observed that the streets in the area were deserted with armed soldiers manning strategic places.

Markets were also closed and residents shut the door to their houses to avoid being caught in the crossfire.

A resident of the town told one of our correspondents that he was surprised to see people running away into safety. He stated that he saw a group of people jubilating while he was going but few minutes after coming back, he saw them fleeing from the area.
