Taraba: Suntai's Cabinet Deny Acting Gov. Claims Over Corruption

Article | | By Mu'Sodiq Adekunle

Contrary to the recent statement made by the Acting Governor of Taraba State, Alhaji Garba Umar, that members of Governor Danbaba Suntai's cabinet were sacked based on corrupt practices, the affected persons have denied the allegation, saying they were sacked following their refusal to aid Umar to unseat the governor.
Citing the "countless unsuccessful moves" made by Umar to become the substantive governor of the state, the former cabinet members of Suntai's administration said they have collectively resolved never to betray him (Suntai).

The former cabinet members, which comprised of seven commissioners, former Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and special advisers, said they would not be deterred by Umar's actions towards them.

They made this known yesterday in a press statement made available to journalists in Jalingo, wondering why the acting governor "has continued to dent our image simply because we refused to support him in his plans to unseat Governor Suntai."

The seven former commissioners, including Rebo E. Usman, Emmanuel Bello, Gebon T . Kataps, Charity Green, Anthony Jelasson, Illiya Wanapie and Yakubu Agbaizo, said some of them voluntarily resigned and were never sacked by Umar.

They stated that those who were sacked were dismissed on the ground that they failed to bow to "Umar's pressure to push Suntai out of office when he is still alive."

"The primary reason why we are not in Garba Umar's cabinet today is because we refused to betray our boss and be part of what is clearly a political perfidy in Taraba State."

In the said interview, which The Guardian learnt was granted outside the state, Umar stated that he sacked the commissioners for corrupt practices.

They observed that Umar's quest to become governor began immediately Governor Suntai and three of his aides got involved in a plane crash in October 2012.

"As soon as Suntai had the crash, Umar's political advisers told him he had to become the governor by all means necessary."
