Comptroller of Immigration, Kwara State Command, Mr. Peter Aburime, has said that no fewer than 1000 corps have been trained to ensure literacy and sensitisation against Ebola virus at borders.
The comptroller, according to a statement by the University of Ilorin, Head of Corporate Services, Mr. Kunle Akogun, on Tuesday, spoke during a courtesy visit by the Vice-Chancellor of UNILORIN, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali.
Aburime said efforts were being made to ensure that the virus would not spread within Nigeria.
He said, "Immigration Service is placing close surveillance on the nation's borders in order to curtail the spread of the Ebola virus in the country.
"Over 1000 corps have been trained and are being deployed to man the nation's borders. This will help to tackle Illiteracy, which is as a major problem at the borders. It is also one of the factors that has slowed down the ECOWAS regional integration plan."
He commended the university for its support to the Service during the last Immigration recruitment exercise.
On his part, Ambali appealed to the Nigeria Immigration Service to intensify efforts in its drive to prevent the flow of Ebola virus among the people in the country.
The vice-chancellor described the disease as "very deadly and terrific", saying that it has become a point of duty for the Immigration Service to put its eyes and ears on ground to avert the spread of the virus in states within Nigeria.
He said, "The country needs the Immigration Service now more than ever before because of the outbreak of the Ebola virus. I urge the government to act fast on the preventive measure in the interest of the citizens.
"The University Senate has approved the sensitisation of the university community on how to prevent the disease. Immigration Service should keep the university abreast of government directives on the Ebola outbreak."
Ambali said that the UNILORIN has 229 international students from 17 countries across the world.
