NUGA: UNIJOS protests UNILAG defeat
February 18, 2014 by Sodiq Oyeleke
Players
and coach of the University of Jos on Monday alleged poor officiating
after losing their football match 2-1 to University of Lagos at the
ongoing 24th edition of the Nigerian University Games which is holding
at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State.
They alleged that the officiating was
tilted in favour of UNILAG because of their team’s proximity to the
competition venue. The players almost assaulted the officials of the
Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps but for prompt intervention of
other officials.
Our correspondent observed that a
security officer had attempted to calm the UNIJOS players when they got
infuriated. They also did not allow journalists to interview their coach
while threatening to break their gadgets.
“Why do you want to speak with our coach
after you have cheated us? This is meant to be students’ games but you
are cheating again. If you try to bring your camera or midget, we will
break it and beat you up,” they said.
