NUGA 2014: Federal outshine states varsities

As
competitions enter day two at the ongoing Nigeria Universities Games in
Obafemi Awolowo University, the Federal owned universities are
outshining their state counterparts.
Among the sports in which Federal
universities have so far dominated are swimming, squash, table tennis,
badminton, and volleyball, among others. However, state universities
including – Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Kogi State
University, and Ekiti State University have also made major strides in
some games.
In Hockey, Obafemi Awolowo University,
Federal University of Technology, Owerri and Federal University of
Agriculture, Abeokuta won while University of Nigeria, Nsukka and
Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida University drew. UNILAG also defeated Federal
University of Agriculture, Abeokuta with 38 runs and 5 wickets at hand
in Cricket.
University of Port-Harcourt since the
start of the competition have bagged gold medals and silver in all the
categories in swimming. University of Ibadan got bronze in female medley
relay final, 200 metres freestyle (men) and backstroke; University of
Ilorin and Nnamdi Azikiwe University had bronze in 200 metre freestyle
(female) and 100 metre butterfly (men).
FUNAAB and Ahmadu Bello University also
clinched a win in table tennis (male), while the final between Adekunle
Ajasin University, Akungba and NAU was postponed.
Federal universities have
also dominated the medal table for badminton so far with Universities
of Ilorin, Bayero and Maiduguri, OAU, UNIBEN, UNIZIK and UNILAG winning
in table tennis. Adamawa State University and Kwara State University won
in the male and female categories of tennis respectively.
