NUGA: LAUTECH, OAU players fight

The ongoing 24th edition of the Nigerian Universities Games took an ugly dimension on Wednesday as physical attacks were recorded at various venues.
While a fight erupted between Ladoke Akintola University and Obafemi Awolowo teams over perceived poor officiating, players of the University of Maiduguri attacked the referee for penalising one of their players which they said gave their opponents advantage.
LAUTECH took to protest after losing 17-12 to OAU in a handball match. The protest escalated when coach Abu of the OAU approached his LAUTECH counter-part to complain about the conduct of his players. As the LAUTECH players saw their coach with Abu, they pushed away OAU’s coach and dragged their coach closer, preventing him from speaking with their opponent.
The development, however, made the OAU players furious and thus led  to a fight between the two teams. They exchanged blows and attacked each other with weapons like sticks and stones.
Other teams, that could be identified by their jerseys,  that joined the fight were Ekiti State University; Federal University of Technology, Minna; and Niger Delta University.
Coach Abu said, “That is the highest insult a player has ever done to me. I was speaking to the coach, not the players. I was only telling him of what his team and supporters did to me during the match.”
It took the intervention of security officials to end the crisis as LAUTECH players threatened to attack any journalist that attempts to interview their coach.
In another development, team UNIMAID who lost to Bayero University Kano in a football match that ended 2-0 attacked the referee and other officials of the match.
Both teams needed three points to qualify to the quarter final stage of the competition and that made the tension higher during the match. A minor scuffle had started in the second half of the match when the referee blew against a UNIMAID player but was settled for the match to continue. Shortly after the final whistle was blown, UNIMAID players were seen pursuing the referee, who ran to meet other official but could not escape the wrath of the players.
