Water producers clean firms, LGs

Water producers from Remo North, Ikene and Sagamu local governments of Ogun State have embarked on sanitation of their firms and the local governments following the allegations that they contribute to environmental impurities.

The water producers, who cleaned their premises and moved around towns in the local governments picking water sachets, said the sanitation was part of their efforts to assist government agencies and also ensure that consumers get safe water.

The Chairman, Association of Table Water Producers, Remo Branch, Mr. Taiwo Onabanjo, said the sanitation would reduce the environmental pollution caused by used sachets of water.

He said, “The environmental sanitation is usually a week programme. It is to ensure that we comply with the regulations of the government on cleanliness and maintaining a safe environment for water production.

“We also ensure that treatment plants of every producer are in compliance with the required standard. We make sure that all the equipment and facilities are in good condition and there is no waste in the surroundings. We have a task force team that ensures that all these things are put in place.”

Secretary of the group, Jamiu Olododo, noted that the sanitation was to fault allegation by members of the public that water producers contributed to litters in the country.

He said, “We decided to put aside a week in every month to ensure that our environment and locality is clean.

“During the exercise, we don’t allow any producer to produce, and if anybody does not comply with our order, we sanction them with levies or lock their company for a while.”
