Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, has urged governments at all levels to develop good road networks, saying the quality of roads in a country determines its level of development.
A statement on Tuesday by the state Director, Bureau of Communications and Strategy, Semiu Okanlawon, quoted the governor as saying this during the presentation of N5.5bn cheques to contractors handling 218-kilometre roads in all the local government areas in the state.
According to him, the condition of a country’s roads is a major indicator of its development or under-development.
He said, “The quality road network marks the level of development of a country. Good roads will enhance economic activities, bring down the cost of goods and services and reduce wear and tear on vehicles.
“Our assault on bad roads is massive. At the state level, work is ongoing at different road projects and at varying stages of completion. This is a demonstration of our resolve.
“The local government roads is a total of 218 kilometres spread across all the local governments in the state and one Area Office at the cost of N16bn.”
He noted that ongoing road constructions in the state were part of the government’s effort to improve the economy of the state.
A representative of the construction companies, Ibrahim Shittu, appealed to the host communities to support the contractors so as to speed up the pace of work.
He promised that the projects would be of good quality and pledge commitment to their completion.
