One killed, 16 injured in Lagos road accident

Tragedy struck on Thursday in the Ikorodu area of Lagos, when a commercial vehicle had an accident resulting in killing of one person and injuring 16 others.

Our correspondent learnt that the bus was conveying passengers from Lagos Island to Ikorodu when it had an accident at Aruna Bus Stop at about 1:30pm.

An identity card found on the dead passenger reads David Eromosele.

The driver was said to have run away, while the conductor was arrested by a team of policemen on patrol.

It was also gathered that calls put forward to the emergency agencies did not go through. An eyewitness said a state government ambulance passing at the time refused to stop when sympathisers waved it down.
As of 3:05pm when our correspondent left the scene, the corpse was still lying on the ground.

One of the passengers, identified simply as Iya Alaje, said the driver had been warned to reduce his speed but he refused.

She said, “About 16 of us in the bus were injured including the conductor but I did not see the driver because he ran away.

“I don’t really know how the accident occurred but I know the driver was on high speed and suddenly the bus tumbled. Thank God for the youths around who rescued us by lifting the bus.”

An eyewitness, identified simply as Samson, said Eromosele was at the front seat when the accident happened.

“If the emergency number had connected, maybe he would not have died because he breathed for a while. Imagine the corpse has been here for more than an hour without any assistance. This is a great tragedy,” he said.
