FEC approves 3 new universities in Kebbi, Yobe, Zamfara
Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa’i, made this known while briefing State House correspondents on the outcome of this week’s FEC meeting in Abuja.
She said that the new university in Kebbi State would be sited in Birnin Kebbi, that of Yobe in Gashua while the one in Zamfara would be sited in Gusau.
She said with the approval of the new universities, the Federal Government had succeeded in establishing a federal university in every state of the federation.
In 2010, the Federal Government established universities in nine states that did not have federal universities.
Rufa’i said eight of the universities had matriculated students and that the remaining one in Otuoke, in the president’s home Bayelsa State would be fully operational in February.
``So, today we are happy to mention and state to the world that three new federal universities have been established by the Jonathan’s administration and already my colleague has mentioned, we have Federal University Birnin Kebbi in Kebbi State, we have Federal University, Gusau in Zamfara State and we have Federal University, Gashua in Yobe State."
According to the minister, academic activities in the three new universities will begin in the 2014/2015 academic year.
Also briefing the correspondents on the outcome of the meeting, the Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku said President Jonathan challenged members of the Executive Council at the meeting, to accelerate pace of economic development to ensure improved quality of lives for Nigerians.
``In today’s Council Mr President gave ministers his priorities for the year and what was most important is that in welcoming members to today’s Council, Mr President gave us a marching order to work harder, faster and deliver results, this year.
``He said the first year of every administration is like laying the foundation.’’
Maku added that the president reminded the ministers of the fact that by May, his administration would be half way through its tenure and urged them to redouble their efforts in impacting positively on the lives of Nigerians.
