Former Chairman, Dunlop Nigeria Plc, Dayo Lawuyi, has urged Human Resources Managers to develop effective succession plan to enhance the progress of their companies in their absence.
Lawuyi said this on Tuesday, while facilitating a breakfast seminar and review of a book, ‘Unleashing your Amazing Potential’, organised by Leadership & Vision Limited in Lagos.
According to him, HR managers must seek to unleash the potential in their organisations by developing the needed talents.
He said, “Develop a succession plan for the business to continuously grow. As an HR manager, you must ensure that one or two people can do your business when you are not there. Some of us are on the job and we don’t want to leave because we are not confident on who will take over from us.
“Succession plan gives room for continuity. You should find someone who can do the duty you do better in your department. Many companies fail today because people available to carry on the job do not have the expertise to sustain the effort of their predecessors.”
He noted that HR managers must secure the future of their organisation through a process of developing resources that can meet the company’s business plan.
“Practical steps must be taken to define talent needs,
discovering talents sources and deploying talent strategically. Have an
integrated business case at all levels for managing potentials. It is important
to start this where you can make the biggest impact, with the talent category
that makes a difference,” he said.
Also, the Chief Executive Officer, Leadership & Vision
Ltd, Mr. Seyi Wright, tasked the HR manager to bring the best out of everyone
that works with them.
He said, “We must have the hand over mentality, you can
develop people only if you have the hand over mentality. Build operate and
transfer not build operate and hold mentality should be encouraged. Ones you
have that mentality of transfer, you can have some one that is better than you
and that will retain your influence, your position effectiveness and efforts.”
Wright said he wrote the book to bring out the best in every
individual. “It is about personal detective, personal excellence and choosing
to do the best no matter what the society dictates,” he added.
