Egbado demands fiscal autonomy for LGs
A cross-section of stakeholders, indigenes and residents of Egbado North/ Imeko Afon Federal Constituency has called for the abolishment of joint state and local government accounts.
This was made known in a communiqué jointly signed by Member, House of Representatives, Egbado North/Imeko Afon Constituency, Razaq Adewusi; session Chairman, Prof. Ayo Alabi; and Secretary, Dr. Iziaq Salako, after a public session on the review of the 1999 Nigeria Constitution.
The group said the issue of the abolishment of state local government joint account and fiscal autonomy for local governments in the country had generated a lot of interest.
The communiqué read in part, “The session observed that the current arrangement of joint account for local governments is not promoting stewardship and accountability from the elected officials at the local government level. This has resulted in poor infrastructural and economic development at the local government levels.
“The session therefore resolved to recommend that section 162 (6) be amended to abolish joint state, local government account so that allocation due to the local government councils would be directly paid to them. The session was also of the opinion that the local government councils should be accorded the status of a third tier of government properly with its own legislative list.”
