Butcher Murders Colleague Over Alcohol Drink

The Police in Enugu have arrested a butcher and murder suspect, Michael Kingsley for allegedly killing a renowned Enugu-based butcher, Ifeanyi Egwuagu.

The police said that Egwuagu was murdered at his residence in Artisan Quarters, Ogui, Enugu.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Superintendent of Police Ebere Amaraizu, who said this in a statement on Tuesday, noted that Egwuagu was killed on Jan. 14, at about 10:30 p.m.

"On that fateful day, information had gotten to the command through its divisional station at Ogui that a butcher identified as Ifeanyi Egwuagu of Artisan Quarters has been allegedly stabbed to death by his butcher friend identified as Michael Kingsley of the same address.

"Kingsley, thereafter, took to his heels on noticing that the victim had fallen down and was gasping for breath.

"Following the information, police  headed to the scene where they met the victim lying down and was immediately rushed to the Eastern Nigeria Medical Centre, Enugu for medical attention and there, he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor on duty,'' he said.

Amaraizu said that the corpse of the deceased had been deposited at the hospital's mortuary for autopsy, adding that the police operatives had arrested the suspect, who claimed to hail from Ubaho in Nkanu East Local Government Area, but resides at Artisan Quarters in Ogui, Enugu.

"In a statement, the suspect revealed that the deceased was his bosom friend and that they were co-butchers at Artisan quarters.''

He said that he was a fowl butcher, while the deceased was a goat butcher at Artisan market in Ogui.

"On that fateful day, he had gone out with one of the butcher friends whom he gave his name as Ogidi to where they took alcoholic drink and returned in the evening.

"He alleged that when they returned, the said Ogidi had allegedly compelled him to buy more drinks and that he refused and that following his alleged refusal, Ogidi engaged him in a fight.

"While fighting, the deceased, who rushed to separate them from fighting, was allegedly stabbed twice with a broken bottle by the rib side and at the lower abdomen and he became unconscious. Then, he, Kingsley, fled to avoid being nabbed as he noticed that the victim was gasping for breath,'' he said.

Amaraizu said that the police had begun investigation into the incident.
