Illegal palace arcades causing accidents in Ago- Safety group
A coalition of Youths and Students under the umbrella of Coalition for Students and Youths Safety has queried the construction of two arcade along Ibekpe Road in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun state.
The coalition said the structure has been attributed for causes of frequent accidents on the Ibekpe road.
The group in a statement signed by its Coordinator Kola Olusoga said safety guidelines where not followed in the construction of the illegal arcade along Ibekpe road leading to the Palace of the Ebumawe of Ago-Iwoye, Oba Rasak Adenugba.
The group urge government to immediately pull down the arcades to avoid continuous road crashes on the road, saying investigation showed it was constructed with approval from the state government and road agencies.
"We want the government and all safety agencies in the country to ensure that lives of students are not sacrificed to road crashes in Ago-Iwoye due to the illegal and improper construction of this arcades.
The group queried why road arcades will be constructed in the middle of roads with sloppy topography.
"The road is narrow, bent, sloppy and without any form of lighting at night which has lead to accidents and road crash.
It's the duty of government to protect lives and property and it's our responsibility to alert them to live to its responsibility," the safety group added.
Olusoga said the construction is of more concern because Ago Iwoye community houses thousands of students and motorcycle is a major means of transportation.
"we call on the government, traditional institutions and relevant stakeholders to prevent what happened in the university town of Ago-Iwoye in 2005 and avoid causing deaths of students and young people in the town," the statement said.
