A Bishop and General Overseer of Sufficient Grace and Truth
Ministry (Rehoboth Arena) Okinni, Osun State, Seun Adeoye, has staged a
one-man protest against the new fuel price regime.
It would be recalled that the Federal Government has deregulated the oil sector and pegged the price of petroleum between at N145 per litre.
During his solo protest in Osogbo on Monday, the Bishop demanded for immediate reversal of the new price regime.
Dressed in his full bishop cassock/regalia, the Bishop displayed a placard reading in capital letters, ‘This is not change, But chain’.
He began his protest from Government House, Okefia and stopped at the popular Olaiya Junction with few sympathisers who joined him on his way.
Bishop Adeoye regretted that Buhari-led administration gave room for increment of fuel price.
He subsequently asked the Federal Government to consider the current hardship the masses are going through by reducing the price to N95 per litre.
He said, “My feeling is that the new hike in fuel price from N86.5k to N145.00k by government is uncalled for. This is unbearable to the poor masses. With this new price hike, it is apparent that the downtrodden have been pushed to the wall.
“The prices of food stuff have skyrocketed. Electricity tariff is also very high. So, we cannot cope with the new fuel price. “Government should rescind the decision in the interest of peace and well being of the people. When Buhari was campaigning, he promised us change. But this is not the change, but chain.
“Government should not push the new price down the throat of the masses. That is why I am doing this for the sake of the 180 million Nigerians and I know people are in support of my protest,” he added.
If the FG refuses to reduce the price, Bishop Adeoye threatened to trek from Osogbo to the Presidency in Abuja.
The Bishop alleged that top government functionaries and political leaders in support of the increment were doing so for personal benefits.
“Only people in their comfort rooms can afford the new price and that is why they are supporting it. If it were deregulation, government wouldn’t have fixed the price. The market should be open to the marketers.”
The clergyman implored the government to hearken to the people and not behave like military government. “Buhari should listen to us as a civilian,” he concluded.
