The Osun State Government has tied the promotion of teachers to the performance of students in external examinations.
The Deputy Governor, Mrs. Titi Laoye-Tomori made this known at a forum in Osogbo, the Osun state capital.
Apart from that, the Deputy Governor also said contractors that secure job from Osun State Government would pay one percent of the contract sum for the development of education.
Laoye-Tomori explained that the payment would enhance funding of the sector, particularly at the lower level.
According to her, the bill for a law to regulate the scheme would soon be sent to the House of Assembly for consideration.
The Deputy-Governor said that, "The promotion of teachers and principals will no longer be automatic, but tied to the performance of the students."
On his part, Chairman of the House of Assembly Committee on Education, Mr. Folorunso Bamisayemi, hailed the development.
However, Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Mr. Adekunle Obawole, rejected the offer.
He said that "It is wrong to tie teachers' promotion to the performance of students, as teachers were not the only factor determining the success of students."
