Health workers begin indefinite strike in Osun
Health workers under the aegis of the Joint Negotiation Council, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Osogbo Chapter have embarked on an indefinite strike.
The health workers union comprises of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives; Non Academic Staff Union; Nigerian Union of Allied Health professionals; Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria and the Senior Staff Association of Universities Teaching Hospitals.
The strike, it was learnt, was necessary after series of peaceful protest failed.
The health workers are demanding the payment of their outstanding salary arrears and National Health Insurance scheme (NHIS) for health workers among others.
When Daily Times visited the hospital, there was reduced activities of workers as the only workers on duties were medical doctors.
When contacted, Chairman, Senior Staff Association of University Teaching Hospitals (SSAUTH), Mr Afolabi Abiodun, disclosed that the health workers at the hospital were going through hard times due to the non-payment of their four months salaries. Afolabi who lamented lack of pension scheme for the health workers, said the industrial action would go on as long as their demands remained unmet.
He appealed to the general public who would be mostly affected to bear with them in the course of fighting for their rights
