MSSN Lagos Half Hour: Who you should  vote for during election

As the February general elections draw closer, an Islamic speaker, ‎Abdul-Hakeem Thanni, has given some criteria that should be used to determine good leaders.

‎Thanni spoke on MSSN Lagos Half Hour, a radio programme sponsored by the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria, Lagos State Area Unit on Star FM 101.5, every Saturday between 08.30am and 09.00am.

The programme, which was co-presented by Abdul-Hakeem Qasim and Ruqayyah Giwa had 'Successful Leadership: A Collective Responsibility' as its topic.

The cleric described leadership as a trust (Amanah), adding that all leaders would be questioned on the day of judgement.

Among the qualities of a worthy leader that he highlighted were selflessness, enthusiasm, orderliness and justice.

He said, "‎Leaders that are good for us must have exemplary characters, passion to achieve the set goals, have target and sense of accomplishment including confident. They‎ must not be a coward, function in an orderly or purposeful manner especially in situations of uncertainty."

According to him, the ability of the leaders to carry out their primary objectives should also‎ constitute reasons why they deserved to be supported.

‎He added, "Leadership is about division of labour. Where ever  you are, one must play ones role to enable the achievement of the  excellence we desire.‎ Father, children, wife, councillor, chairman, legislators are to play their roles in achieving the set goals that we desire.‎

"Everyone must play their roles. Since the duties have been distributed. ‎ We must also be disciplined. We must have the ability to bring justice. Like Allah told Prophet Dawud, leaders must judge with justice."

He thereafter counselled electorates not to allow religious and tribal sentiments to overshadow their reasoning while voting.

"‎We are moving towards the time of election and people are coming to us to vote for them especially because we are  Muslims and serve as role models. But today, we have been divided in the line of tribe, religion which is wrong. It should not be about that, it should be about who can do it. We should not sell our rights. We should vote for excellence," he said.‎‎
