As Nigeria clocks 54, students have rated the performance of government at all levels low in areas of education and fight against corruption.
The students, who spoke under the aegis of Muslim Students Society of Nigeria, Lagos State Area Unit, described the condition of education in the country as undesirable.
They spoke in an independence message signed by their President, Kaamil Kalejaiye, on Wednesday.
Kalajaiye, in the statement, prayed for Nigeria's development, noting that there was need for God's intervention in the activities of the country.
He said, "It is important to say that it is only with God's intervention that Nigeria shall grow desirably, but characters exhibited by our leaders are not in anyway encouraging especially in the area of education. Nigerian leaders are obviously the bane of students and educational development. 54 years after independence, our academic institutions still go on strike more than holidays.
"The mass failure in the just concluded West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) examination is just one of the numerous things to show for our failing educational system. Our youths are still out there looking for jobs. Those of us that have decided to create jobs for ourselves are not allowed to succeed through elistic and un-progressive government policies."
Apart from education, Kalejaiye also called on government at all levels to step up efforts in fighting corruption and insecurity.
He explained that the kidnap of Chibok girls was painful and disturbing, saying "what the girls would be going through was unimaginable. We cannot picture their safety just as information from security operatives are imbalance and untrustworthy."
According to him, the manner at which government cover religious leaders on corrupt cases and other malpractices won't make the country grow.
