The authorities of the Nigerian Heart Foundation have listed Sunola soya oil as one of the heart-friendly foods in the country.
At the recent marking of the certification of the cooking oil, President of the NHF, Prof. Oladipo Akinkugbe, said the Foundation was concerned with promoting the health of the average citizen.
He noted that though heart disease was one of the non-communicable diseases, it was very expensive to manage, not only in terms of money, but because of its toll on overall wellness.
According to the emeritus Professor of Medicine, what people eat affects their heart health, hence, the need to know the right type of oil to use when cooking in order to prevent non-communicable diseases such as ischaemic heart disease.
A paediatric cardiologist, Dr. Femi Mobolaji-Lawal, noted that the human body produces both the high-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein, regarded as 'good' and 'bad' cholesterol respectively.
He, however, advocated the consumption of soyabean oil in order to increase the HDL and reduce the LDL in the body, thereby improving heart health.
"Cholesterol-free soy oil contains phytosterols, which may lower LDL cholesterol and increase HDL," Mobolaji-Lawal said.
