Stakeholders brainstorm on inclusive education
JULY 25, 2014 BY SODIQ OYELEKE
Stakeholders in the education sector in Lagos State have called for an inclusive educational system that would protect the interest of children with special needs.
They spoke at the 2014 stakeholders' forum of the advocacy committee on special education matter, organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the State Accountability and Voice Initiative; Education Sector Support Programme in Nigeria and Golden Pen Media Concept Company.
They demanded that the state government should implement and execute laws that guarantee the rights of children with disabilities.
Lagos State Commissioner of Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, assured the stakeholders that the government would do everything within its power to ensure the continuous provision of an inclusive education.
She said there was need for collaborative efforts to end the stigmatisation challenge confronting children with special needs.
"We are working to ensure the protection of every person in the state but I also urge stakeholders to assist on this. Our education policy has always been inclusive and we are doing everything possible to make sure people adhere to laws guiding the children with special needs," she said.
Chairman, Lagos State Advocacy Committee on Special Education Matters, Deaconess Adeola Olanrewaju, described inclusive education as a human right.
