Primary education needs more attention –Jinadu

JULY 25, 2014 BY SODIQ OYELEKE

The Medical Director of Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Meta, Dr. Yewandu Jinadu, has called for improved attention in primary education.

Jinadu, who is the newly elected President of Lekki Lions Club, District 404 A1, spoke after the club's board meeting on Thursday.

She said the club was worried by the low attention paid to children's health and education in some states in Nigeria.

As a means to ensure standard education for children, she said the club would be providing toilet and educational support for schools within its district.

The newly elected Lion's president said the decision to assist children's development through health and educational support was in line with club's mission of rendering humanitarian services

She also noted that government needs to be supported in its effort of providing qualitative education.

She said, "The government might have been doing its best but we can all see that there is the need for support. Children need more attention health-wise and educationally. We must not always forget that children are the future of our society. We must keep investing in them.

"Not only should they be made to grow, the kind of environment they will be growing also matter. This is why we are focusing on their need in the areas of health and education. The toilet facilities in some government schools need to be improved upon and we will be doing our best on that for selected schools."

While soliciting support to execute the projects, Jinadu said the club would also be providing eye care support for children in the orphanages to boost their well-being.

She said, "For us, the less privileged should not be left uncared for. They are part of us and we want them to grow. We have observed that majority of the children you see at government schools are not from elitistic homes. They are in school because they want a future for themselves. As a way to correct some of the worrisome situation of facilities in schools within our vicinity.

"The projects we will be executing in the schools are: financial support for eye care in orphanages; provision of toilets in public schools; supply of school books to orphanage and provision of well - stocked first aid boxes to public schools. This will help to support government and we will either be renovating or building some of the structures."
