Interim National Chairman, All Progressive Congress, Chief Bisi Akande
National dialogue ill-timed, deceptive –APC chieftain
The
national dialogue being planned by the Federal Government is ill-timed
and a ploy to deceive the citizens, a chieftain of the All progressive
Congress in Lagos State, Chief Ayo Akande, said in a statement on
Thursday.
President Goodluck Jonathan had on
Monday inaugurated a 13-man committee headed by Senator Femi Okunrounmu
to prepare the blue print for the conference within one month.
The President, in his Independence
anniversary broadcast on October 1 had said the willingness of the
Federal Government to hold a national dialogue was to yield to the
yearnings of notable Nigerians calling for it.
But, Akande in his statement accused the
Federal Government of insincerity in holding the conference at this
moment, saying that it was ill-timed.
He said, “There was no sincerity in the
decision to inaugurate this conference. It is a mere diversionary
measure typical of most aborted national debates and conferences
instituted by past leaders of the country.
“The convocation of the conference is
ill-timed and called for caution on the part of Nigerians not to swallow
the bait of President Jonathan.
“We have shouted for this national
conference for many years from the period of Obasanjo to Yar-adua to no
avail. Why now that the election is at the corner? It will create a lot
of confusion.”
The APC chieftain explained that the
inauguration of the conference was the Peoples Democratic Party’s “Greek
gift” to Nigerians.
“This gift will precipitate so much
upheavals that will take the concentration off the forthcoming 2015
elections in the country, hence it is a ploy to rig the election,” he
added.
