Undemocratic acts responsible for PDP crisis – CNPP
The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties has attributed the crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party to the despotic and undemocratic tendencies of the Bamanga Tukur-led PDP.
The CNPP explained that the unresolved crisis in the party and the sidelining of some members of the party made the emergence of a parallel PDP inevitable.
Speaking in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents on Monday, the Rivers State Chairman of the CNPP, Dr. Manaigbi Dagogo-Jack, said “the undemocratic and despotic practices” of the Bamanga Tukur-led PDP paved the way for a parallel party.
Dagogo-Jack argued that the Tukur-led PDP left many crises in the PDP across the country unresolved, adding that the formation of another PDP led by Kawu Baraje was a reaction to the injustice in the party.
He observed that the Tukur-led PDP had been one-sided on many issues affecting the unity of the PDP, maintaining that the existence of the Baraje-led PDP was a mere expression of members’ right to protest against injustice.
“What is going on in the PDP in the past is a shame to democracy. It is a shame to the party that prides itself as the largest political party in Africa. It has been injustice against one member or the other without any consideration to address the issues of the ground.
“We have seen in the PDP the largest spirit of despotism and undemocratic tendencies and the emergence of a parallel PDP in Abuja on Saturday was a mere reaction against undemocratic practices in the party,” he said.
Dagogo-Jack, however, called on the Kawu Baraje-led PDP to be fair to members of the party, advising that actions that led to the emergence of a parallel PDP should be avoided.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, has said that he belongs to the faction of the PDP led by Abubakar Kawu Baraje.
Amaechi made this remark on Monday while interacting with newsmen in Port Harcourt shortly after arriving from Abuja.
The governor, who spoke on the outcome of the recent PDP mini convention in Abuja, urged journalists to refer their questions to the National Chairman of the parallel PDP.
Amaechi also declined comment on the future of the ruling party, especially as it concerned the 2015 election.
He said, “I am not the national chairman, the national chairman is Abubakar Kawu Baraje and he is the only person who is qualified to speak for now or the publicity secretary.
“All you know is that I belong to the PDP led by Abubakar Kawu Baraje and we are forging ahead because we need to make some changes.”
But a former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, has advised the gladiators in the PDP to resolve the crisis rocking the party.
He urged the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar and Tukur not to allow the prediction by some opposition that the party would implode before 2015 elections to come true.
