Lawmaker decries disregard for law

A member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Lasun Yusuf, has lamented that both government and citizens usually disregard the provisions of the constitution in their activities.

The lawmaker, who represented IfeIodun/Olorunda/Orolu/Osogbo Federal Constituency in Osun State, said this in Lagos at a Ramadan lecture organised by AbdulRasheed Mafe Quranic Foundation.

He said, “When you look at the constitution, Nigeria has a very good constitution no doubt about that, but government has ceased to perform its basic functions which are security of lives and welfare of the people; that is why I find it difficult to understanding if government exists or not.

“I don’t know the problem of  the black man and I have always tried to find out from scholars what is wrong with  the black man; it looks like we don’t like order and we don’t like rules and God in his infinite mercy created this world with law  and order. As human beings, when you refuse to follow rules and order, then you can’t have a good society. Government needs to appreciate the benefits of orderliness and do its utmost to ensure people obey rules and regulations.”

A senior lecturer from Lagos State University, Dr. Saheed Timehin, urged government at all levels to perform their constitutional duties by providing socio-economic facilities.

He said, “We find ourselves in this mess because government has failed in providing social welfare packages for the people. The essence of governance is that the government is supposed to put in place structures that will guarantee the total well being of everybody.

“When a certain section or a considerable portion of the society suffers, then there is going to be a problem.
Also, the founder of the foundation, AbdulRasheed Mafe, proffered decentralisation of power as a way forward for the country’s development.

Mafe, who is the chairman of Mosan-Okunola Local Council Development Area of Lagos, said, “In advanced countries, the power to police the populace lies with state and local governments. Federal Government should be more concerned with external security. I urge us to reconsider the creation of state police to curb the growing insecurity.”
