Self-empowerment, solution to youth unemployment – Don
A lecturer at the Lagos Business School, Dr. Doyin Salami, has urged youths to improve their skills through learning, networking and engaging in creative ventures that will make them to be self-reliant.
Salami, who was represented by Dr. Olugbenga Olufeagba, at a symposium organised by a public-private partnership organisation, ‘Think Oyo’, on Saturday, said self-employment was the only solution to the high unemployment rate among youths.
While speaking on the theme, ‘Education for self-sustenance as a means of combating unemployment in Oyo State,’ Salami said there was the need for youths in the country to position their skills for value change.
He said, “Nigerian youths must re-orientate themselves. Self-employment is the guarantee for unemployment. Only self-education can make them successful. You can only earn a living with education; but with self-education, you can earn a fortune. They must pursue their passion vigorously and that will open doors for them.
“There are opportunities in the reforms that the government is doing in different sectors; it is expected that you look out for the smallest in value chain in the reformed sector where I don’t need to approach a bank to get big loans. First, you must be aware, go through the Internet and maximise the knowledge deposit in it.”
The Head, Small and Medium Enterprise, Stanbic IBTC Bank, Mr. Akintunde Oyebode, urged youths to be passionate and determined.
